Which breaks can be mended
Most frames give way at a stress point rather than across a rim: a soldered joint where the bridge meets the rim, an end piece, a hinge that has worked loose in its seat, or the screw thread in a temple. Metal joints of that kind can usually be re-welded or re-soldered, provided the alloy takes heat.
Acetate and celluloid are different work. A clean break can be bonded and reinforced, and a hinge pulled out of its seat can be re-set, but the colour and polish around the repair have to be worked back by hand. Injection plastics such as nylon, ultem, TR90 and grilamid respond to neither method.
Clear photographs of the break, taken close and in good light, are usually enough to tell which of these a frame needs. Visio Optical offers repair, and spectacles restoration and repaint.
How to tell acetate from injection-moulded plastic
The two look similar on a shelf and behave nothing alike under a repair. Cellulose acetate is cut and milled from a solid sheet, so the colour runs right through the material and any pattern has visible depth and layering. It feels dense and slightly warm in the hand, and the edges have been polished rather than moulded.
Injection plastics β nylon, ultem, TR90, grilamid β are shot into a mould, so the colour is even and flat throughout, the frame is noticeably lighter and springier, and there is often a faint seam line running along the inside of the temple or around the rim. That springiness is the point of the material, and it is also why a clean break in it will not take a bond.
If you are unsure, photograph the frame from the inside of the temple where the model name and any material code are usually printed, along with a close shot of the break itself in good light. Between the two, the material and the method are usually clear.
