With more than 160 years experience in research and development across all facets of optics, Carl Zeiss is leading the way in product innovation. This has led our lens design research scientists to develop an enhanced progressive for the Asian face, resulting in the development of GT2 3D Asiana by ZEISS.

The shape of a face is an important factor when it comes to designing progressive lenses. The craniometry, or the underlying bone structure of the head and face, has a marked difference between Caucasian and Asian populations. Often, the cheek structure of the Asian face has a flatter profile and the bridge of the nose is less pronounced. These two factors combined reduce the amount of Pantoscopic Tilt and the degree of Bow Angle found in Asian wearers.

Carl Zeiss Vision's research team evaluated the Position-of-Wear of spectacle lenses in frames worn by a group of Asian patients. This research involved the measurement of the key Position-of-Wear values on a range of subjects using the highly accurate ZEISS-designed digital centration instrument known as the RVT (Relaxed Vision Terminal). As a result of this study, the Position-of-Wear values for the new GT2 3D Asiana design were found to be essentially different to that of a Caucasian wearer.

Traditionally, progressive lenses are manufactured, fitted and adjusted to the customer’s need separately and are optimised under monocular conditions. But humans have two eyes – and it is only perfect interaction of both eyes that can ensure a perfect 3D image is formed by our brain.
Carl Zeiss Vision has accepted the challenge to synchronise binocular vision so that it creates improved 3D vision. GT2 3D – a new generation of ZEISS progressive lenses – ensures a natural 3D experience and a new dimension of spatial perception.

ZEISS Individual FrameFit: From evolution to revolution

With ZEISS Individual FrameFit, Carl Zeiss has developed a progressive lens with revolutionary properties: on the basis of the Rx and fitting data provided by the optician, we compute and produce a progressive lens tailored precisely to each individual requirements.
Unlike earlier generation progressives, the PD, back vertex distance, pantoscopic angle, boxed frame dimensions and near object distance are all incorporated in the design of the progressive lens for each individual case.
Thanks to pioneering, innovative production technology, what was considered impossible in the past has now become reality.

 

Development of ZEISS Individual FrameFit

Unlike traditional progressive lenses, the patient's specific centration data are also incorporated in the design of progressive lenses. Manufacturing technology has made it possible to produce progressive lenses which are tailored to every patient's own individual requirements, further enhancing the visual comfort for spectacle wearers.

 

What makes ZEISS Individual FrameFit so revolutionary?

In addition to the incorporation of various parameters in the progressive lens design for the very first time, we compute and produce Gradal Individual FrameFit individually for every lens power.

In traditional PAL design, lens optimisation is performed for a power within a certain range, i.e. not for an individual dioptric power, but for a group of powers. Carl Zeiss has made this tailor-made process as accurate as possible by increasing the number of groups (base curves) used.

The design of Gradal Individual FrameFit allows the lens to be customised for every power (dioptre, cylinder, axis, addition, prism, base). This is combined with the revolutionary possibility of incorporating various parameters in the lens design.

 

Maximizing individuality. Minimizing aberrations.

The outstanding feature of Gradal Individual FrameFit is its very large usable fields of vision – even for data which deviate from the norm.
In the past, it was technically impossible to incorporate the pantoscopic angle, back vertex distance and PD in the computation and production of a progressive lens. Standard values had to be substituted for these parameters. This meant that the pantoscopic angle and BVD (back vertex distance) recommended by the lens manufacturer had to be observed to obtain optimum results in the fitting process. However, this was not always possible – often for anatomical reasons.

Until now, no allowance was made for the wearer’s PD despite the fact that, along with the distance correction and the addition, it influences the convergence of the eyes required for near vision. In other words, the variable inset of the intermediate and near zones is partly determined by the PD of the wearer.

The outstanding feature of Gradal Individual FrameFit is its very large usable fields of vision – even for data which deviate from the norm.

DDV, Dual Digital Vision: a front and back surface progressive approach

Dual Digital Vision is a new way of using both sides of the lens to tailor Varilux Ipseo new Edition to the physiology of each wearer.

Prismatic effects are controlled by splitting the addition between the front and the back surfaces of the lens, in order to best suit the wearer’s head and eye movements.

Patient benefits

  • The image stabiliser for head movers.

A greater proportion of the addition value is located on the concave side of the lens in order to minimise the amount of swim / sway perceived by the wearer. Having more addition of the rear surface acts as an “image stabiliser” for head movers.

  • The image stabiliser for eye movers.

A greater proportion of the add is located on the convex side of the lens. This results in a greater image magnification over a wider area of clear vision, ideal for scanning a page. Having more of the addition on the front surface of the lens acts as an ”image magnifier” for eye movers.

The ultimate personalisation

When ordering:

  • Head / eye ration, stability coefficient data must be specified.
  • Progression length will be automatically calculated unless specified (between 14mm and 18mm, by 1mm step).
  • Frame measurements (vertex distance, pantoscopic angle, wrap angle), reading distance and near mono Pds are optional.
