What is Glare?

Glare is described as a loss of visibility due to high intensity light. Glare essentially overpowers the eye, making it unable to adapt.

Polarized light produces "veiling glare" on the retina, sometimes called blinding glare. Much like looking through a sheer set of curtains hanging in front of your living room window, or the veil that is worn by a bride, objects reflecting polarized light lose some of their clarity and contrast for the observer. Colors also appear washed out.

The higher the degree of polarization the light possesses, the more it interferes with vision. Wearing polarized lenses allow a greter eye comfort, an unmatched clarity of vision and a truer color perception compared to ordinary sunlenses.

What is polarized light?

Light is emitted in waves by the sun, or by artificial sources like a bulb. These waves vibrate and travel in all directions from the source. When light encounters an object, it can reflect and enter the eyes. This light is focused onto the retina and sent to the brain where vision occurs.

Often, light reflects back to our eyes from shiny surfaces such as roads or buildings, car hoods, sand, and water. When this happens, the reflected light waves now travel in a single horizontal plane and with high intensity.

This "flattened" light is known as "polarized light". When light bounces off a shiny surface, it can become polarized and enter the eye causing blinding glare.

Also known as photochromic lenses, self-tinting lenses have been around since the 1960's. Scratches and smudges reduce visual acuity

Scratches and smudges are more than a cosmetic distraction; they actually decrease the visual acuity of the eyeglass wearer. Premium anti-reflective lenses with better scratch protection help ensure maximum visual acuity.

With more than 160 years experience in research and development across all facets of optics, Carl Zeiss is leading the way in product innovation. This has led our lens design research scientists to develop an enhanced progressive for the Asian face, resulting in the development of GT2 3D Asiana by ZEISS.

The shape of a face is an important factor when it comes to designing progressive lenses. The craniometry, or the underlying bone structure of the head and face, has a marked difference between Caucasian and Asian populations. Often, the cheek structure of the Asian face has a flatter profile and the bridge of the nose is less pronounced. These two factors combined reduce the amount of Pantoscopic Tilt and the degree of Bow Angle found in Asian wearers.

Carl Zeiss Vision's research team evaluated the Position-of-Wear of spectacle lenses in frames worn by a group of Asian patients. This research involved the measurement of the key Position-of-Wear values on a range of subjects using the highly accurate ZEISS-designed digital centration instrument known as the RVT (Relaxed Vision Terminal). As a result of this study, the Position-of-Wear values for the new GT2 3D Asiana design were found to be essentially different to that of a Caucasian wearer.

What makes ZEISS Individual FrameFit so revolutionary?

In addition to the incorporation of various parameters in the progressive lens design for the very first time, we compute and produce Gradal Individual FrameFit individually for every lens power.

In traditional PAL design, lens optimisation is performed for a power within a certain range, i.e. not for an individual dioptric power, but for a group of powers. Carl Zeiss has made this tailor-made process as accurate as possible by increasing the number of groups (base curves) used.

The design of Gradal Individual FrameFit allows the lens to be customised for every power (dioptre, cylinder, axis, addition, prism, base). This is combined with the revolutionary possibility of incorporating various parameters in the lens design.

 

Maximizing individuality. Minimizing aberrations.

The outstanding feature of Gradal Individual FrameFit is its very large usable fields of vision – even for data which deviate from the norm.
In the past, it was technically impossible to incorporate the pantoscopic angle, back vertex distance and PD in the computation and production of a progressive lens. Standard values had to be substituted for these parameters. This meant that the pantoscopic angle and BVD (back vertex distance) recommended by the lens manufacturer had to be observed to obtain optimum results in the fitting process. However, this was not always possible – often for anatomical reasons.

Until now, no allowance was made for the wearer’s PD despite the fact that, along with the distance correction and the addition, it influences the convergence of the eyes required for near vision. In other words, the variable inset of the intermediate and near zones is partly determined by the PD of the wearer.

The outstanding feature of Gradal Individual FrameFit is its very large usable fields of vision – even for data which deviate from the norm.
